CIT - God can use even the most broken and sinful people to accomplish his will.
Proposition - God take the broken and the sinful and transforms them and uses them in His great work of redemption.

INTRODUTION:
Skeletons in the closet. The phrase is used to describe secrets. Usually family secrets or some juicy piece of personal history that is hidden to protect those involved. Something that if it came out in the open would be embarrassing, even scandalous. Maybe something you did earlier in life, or some embarrassing brother in law or cousin!

In Matthew 1:3 we are going to dig up some bones, pull out some skeletons form God’s closet. Some relatives of Jesus that were, shall we say, less than desirable. 5 of them are women. We are going to start this morning with a woman named Tamar.
TELL THE STORY:
ACT I - Like Father - Like Son - Vs. 1-11
Background: Joseph sold into slavery. This was Judah’s idea
• Judah
Friends with an Adullimate - Hirah
Meets a Canaanite woman - The daughter of Shua - She goes unnamed.
He knows he should not do this, but it was lust at first sight
She bears him 3 sons.
Er, Onan, Shelah
• Er - Marries Tamar. Her name means palm tree and denotes beauty and fertility.
He was so wicked that God put him to death. Not since Sodom and Gomorrah has God done this - and never to an individual.
• Onan - Explain Levirite Marriage
But he would not do it.
Probably Greed - He knew that if Tajmar had a son he would get Er’s inheritance. If there was no son - then there was more for Onan.
Again - for the second time in Genesis - God puts him to death for being wicked.

• Back to Judah - His sin and his wickedness have corrupted his sons. They have followed his examp ...
