Romans 6:1-14
Let's bow for prayer. "Dear Father, You've brought us here we believe by
appointment. We are confident that it is not accidental that we have gathered
in this place, but that You've brought us to this hour for a word from Thyself.
Some have arrived here with great anxiety, fears, problems, question marks
all over their lives. Others are here just as a tourist passing through to
see. Some are here complacent and confident and indifferent because church
is just the same old stuff. They've been so many times. Lord, we ask and
pray that you will give us a fresh word. We pray for a personal word ... a
message with our names on it. You speak. Let me get out of the way so that
Thy word and Thy holy and divine message might not only be heard, but may it
be received and understood and incorporated into our lives. For we make this
prayer in the strong, holy name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Lord.
Amen."
President Lincoln was working late on New Year's Day in 1963. Because this
was the day, if you can remember your history, that he issued the Emancipation
Proclamation. Our country was less than a hundred years old. But our astute
and godly President saw that slavery would ruin us. He looked at its roots
and understood that it was wrong. So he penned the Emancipation Proclamation.
later it was ratified by Congress, and the news began to sift down to the
southern states - Georgia and Mississippi. Alabama. Texas. On and on.
Missouri - that all the slaves have been set free. Now this message was
slow in arriving because a war was on. Some did not know about it until
