SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

IJohn 2:1-11


Hope you have your Bibles open to First John. We're looking at the first part

of Chapter 2 tonight. You might want to open it and hold it there just for

a moment. Let's bow for prayer as we begin.


"Father, it's thrilling to open Thy word and see how we find there answers

to so many of our questions. So much of our probing, so much of our doubts

and fears are just dealt with so beautifully. Tonight we pray again that

You will speak and instruct us and be our leader. Let me get out of the way

so that Thy word and Thy holy and divine message might be heard, received

and understood and incorporated into our lives. We pray always in the beau-

tiful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Lord. Amen."


The book of First John tells us how to maintain a steady, flowing stream of

unbroken relationships between ourselves through Jesus Christ and God Al-

mighty Himself. Isn't that thrilling? And the secret is that there is a

fountain that flows from the middle of our lives and it just keeps on flow-

ing...it keeps on flowing, and in that stream of love-flowing, faith-flowing,

life flowing from our lives, there is that steady, unbroken relationship with

God Almighty Himself. Our passage deals with assurance. To know that you

know. To be confident that you're born again. To walk with that steadiness

of faith in light and not in darkness in such a way that you can say anytime,

anywhere, "I am confident that I'm a child of God." It's amazing to me how

many of us spend so much time in the shallows of our living and in the doubts

of our faith saying, "I wonder. Am I sure? How can I know that I really

know Him as my Savior and my Lor ...
