We have been studying the book of Joel on Sunday mornings over the last few weeks. So far, we have seen how genuine repentance leads to restoration and reconciliation. Today, from Joel 2:28-32, we see an incredible promise from God. In fact, tucked away in the middle of this prophecy, we see one of the greatest promises of God in the entire Bible.
*I don’t want you to think I’m exaggerating. You know, preachers have a tendency to do that sometimes. Maybe not your preacher, but other preachers!* This really is one of the most incredible promises of God in the entire Bible. Here, God promises to send the Holy Spirit to His people. *I don’t know if you have noticed this recently, but it’s ‘‘promising season.’’ ‘‘Promising season’’ comes around about every two years. In fact, ‘‘promising season’’ miraculously corresponds to every election season as well. Every time there is an election in our state or our country, there are all kinds of promises being made. But did you know, in between promising season, we have what I like to call, ‘‘making excuses’’ season. Lately, everywhere you turn there are political ads. You can’t get away from them. They’re on the television during your favorite game, they’re on your social media sites, they’re on the radio, they’re on billboards, they are everywhere. It’s like nobody cares about my car’s extended warranty anymore, they only want to call and talk about their favorite political candidate. And what do they do? They promise you everything they think you want. And they promise you the other candidate will be the worst thing in the world. I literally just saw an ad that said if you vote for this certain political party, ‘‘they will take away your freedoms, rule with fear, and it could be the end of our democracy.’’ Wow, I think they want you scared.
