Series: Faith Steps
Brian Mills
Judges 6:1
Faith Steps allow the Impossible to happen
Today we will start with Gideon.
Gideon was a judge over Israel.
Gideon is known as the greatest of all the 15 judges.
We will look at parts of Gideon’s life today, which was given three chapters in the O.T.
He is the second judge of Israel after Samson,
He was the youngest of a poor family from the tribe of Manasseh.
Let’s start in Judges 6:1 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, (Normal for the Israelites and the Judges/Kings of the days) and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.
By the Way - this is the same story we are at right now in Next Gen in the Gospel Project as well as in our Adult Class called Parent Talk - which aligns with our Next Gen.
If you remember post Joshua, they were supposed to keep fighting and taking the land. But remember, the Israelites did not do so.
As a matter of fact, it says in Judges 2:16 -17 16 Then the Lord raised up judges,[c] who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.
They drifted back to their old ways quickly.
The Midianites were the only ones they could have conquered.
During Moses day, they had already been conquered once
Yet they came back and settled in what is today’s Saudi Araba.
The Midianites then came from the North all the way to the south to create havoc on the Israelites.
Judges 6:2 Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds.
As a result, you get to
Judges 6:6 Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.
Sound familiar? We trust in our ways until our ways no longer ...
