I am LIGHT (11 of 13)
Series: Ephesians: Who Am I? Discovering our True Identity
Jordan Easley
Ephesians 5:1-20
What do you want to be... when you grow up?
Your answer to that question... has probably changed over the years. I know mine has. I remember when my kids were little, Audra and I brought them to the circus...and after it was over, my son made the announcement... ‘‘When I grow up... I’m gonna be a peanut seller!’’ Apparently, the guy selling peanuts that night made a huge impression on him.
When my daughter was little, I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up... and she said, ‘‘She wanted to be a Princess... and she wanted to marry Aladdin’’ ... I assumed it was because he has my skin tone... and a sweet magic carpet... Maybe I’m wrong? ... But nonetheless... when she was little... she had big dreams!
Today, he no longer wants to sell peanuts at the circus... and she no longer wants to be a Princess... their ‘dreams’ have changed over the years... and I’m sure your dreams have changed as well. What do you want to be... when you grow up?
Maybe you’d say, ‘I want to be successful, or happy, or popular, or rich.’ Maybe you’d answer that and say, ‘I want to be a good mom or a good dad’... or ‘I want to be well-liked or remembered’... We all have ‘dreams’ when it comes to the person we hope to become.
But let me tell you: As followers of Jesus... There needs to be a point in our spiritual journey... where, instead of constantly asking, ‘‘What do I WANT to be?’’ We need to begin asking the question... ‘‘Who does GOD WANT me to be?’’ That’s just a different kind of question.
For the past couple of months, we’ve been talking about WHO God says we are... and He’s shown us our identity changes... when we are ‘in Christ.’ So, if you were to ask me today, ‘‘Jordan, what do you want to be when you grow up?’’ I can honestly say to you... because my identity has been changed... and my perspective has changed... ‘‘I now want to grow ...
