Introduction

Friday was three months that we’ve been here at Chesapeake and what a joy it’s been. I really feel like I have the best job in the world: getting paid to study and teach the Bible. I love learning and I love sharing the fruit of that learning with others. My job is to serve the Kingdom of God by helping you better understand and apply the truths of God into your lives.

It’s a job I take seriously because of how important it is for you to know and live out these truths. Just a few weeks ago a report called ‘‘The State of Theology’’ by Ligonier Ministries and LifeWay Research was released, a survey taken every two years to determine what Americans believe about God, salvation, ethics, and the Bible. Specifically, what I want to highlight for you is not what people in general believe, but specifically evangelicals.

Now when we say evangelicals, let’s define that. Put politics aside because evangelicals aren’t defined by how they vote; rather, historically, evangelical is defined as a person who holds not only to the historic faith of the Christian tradition but also put a high emphasis on the need for every person to repent of their sins and profess faith in Jesus. In other words, at the risk of oversimplification, we’re talking about those who would claim to be church-going people who believe the Bible.

Among this group of people, people who you and I go to church with, this survey found that 56% of evangelicals believe that God accepts the worship of all religions (Statement No. 3). 43% believe that Jesus was a great teacher but was not God (Statement No. 7).
