Hebrews 3:7-19

Open your bibles to Hebrews 3. Most of us know that the #1 cause of death in America is heart disease. It’s caused by arteriosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries. This happens when plaque builds up in the arteries and restricts the flow blood flow to and through the heart. Heart disease doesn’t happen overnight; it is a gradual process. A heart attack may come suddenly, but heart disease does not.

The reason I mention this is because the English word sclerosis is the same word that appears twice in our text today. The writer of Hebrews warns his audience to not allow their spiritual hearts to be hardened. You not only have a physical heart that you are to take good care of, but you have a spiritual heart you are to protect and guard as well.

Proverbs 4:23 says: ‘‘Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.’’ Your spiritual heart is the headquarters where all of your thoughts, motives, intentions, and desires are formulated. It’s the control center of your life. It’s within your spiritual heart that you make decisions, and the footsteps of life are directed. The state of your spiritual heart determines the direction of your life, and ultimately, the destiny of your soul.

In Hebrews 3, starting in verse 7, the writer warns these Jewish Christians, who are tempted to stop following Jesus and go back to Judaism, to not allow their hearts to be hardened, which would lead to spiritual decay, disease, and death. Today, we’re going to see four aspects of a hard heart.
