Hebrews 4:1-13
Open your bibles to Hebrews 4. The title of the message today is ‘Enjoy God’s Best Rest’. How does that sound? Are you in need of some good, godly rest? If so, I hope you will pay close attention because I believe God has a good word for you.
I have a humble, honest confession: I can preach the bible better than I can live it. Somewhere right now my wife is muttering under her breath: ‘Amen’. Today’s text about rest is one that convicts me to my core.
Question: What would you say the opposite of resting is? Most people would probably say ‘working’ or ‘doing’. Because we think in terms of activity vs. inactivity. But is it possible for a person to be doing nothing, but still not be resting? Sure it is. Because real rest isn’t about inactivity. Real rest doesn’t start on the outside and work its way inside. Real rest must take place on the inside of a person and then it works its way out.
I want to suggest that the opposite of resting is churning. You know what churning is, right? Churning involves those feelings of apprehension, nervousness, anxiety, uneasiness, worry, fear, and dread. Churning keeps you awake in the wee hours of the morning. It ruins your day by robbing you of your focus, joy, and confidence. If you churn inwardly long enough, it can literally drive you to the brink of despair and beyond.
I hate to admit it, but I can be a churning machine. I have been on vacations with my family when I was hundreds of miles from the church, I didn’t have any meetings, didn’t do any sermon prep, didn’t do any counseling, but I came back worn out. Why? Because while I was physically a long way from work, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, work was still going on inside of me. I was churning about a problem, or a person, or a situation. That happens more often than I’d like to admit. So this message is one that I desperately need.
