Hebrews 1:4-14
Open your bibles to Hebrews 1. The heart of the Gospel ultimately boils down to three questions:
1. Who is Jesus Christ?
2. What has He done?
3. What is the significance for each of us?
What is number one? Who is Jesus Christ? I think this might be one of our problems when it comes to evangelism. When we talk about Jesus with others, we often jump straight to the work of Christ before talking about the person of Christ. But before we address what Jesus has done for us, it’s important that we clarify who Jesus is. After all, the only reason Jesus could do what He did for us is because of who He is. The writer of Hebrews begins by reintroducing his audience to the person of Christ before teaching them about the work of Christ.
That brings us to our text today Hebrews 1:4-14. This letter was written to Jewish Christians living in Rome. Since they knew the OT extremely well, they had profound respect for angels. They would have read...
• In Job 38 that angels were present at the creation of the world.
• In Genesis 19 how two angels rescued Lot from the destruction of Sodom.
• In Exodus 12 how one angel destroyed all the first-born children of Egypt.
• In Daniel 6 how an angel saved three men from a fiery furnace. And another shut the mouths of lions.
• In 1 Kings 19 how an angel brought the prophet Elijah food and drink to strengthen him.
• 2 Kings 19 about an angel who destroyed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night.
Angels appear over 100 times in the OT. The problem was that the Jews didn’t just respect angels, they were infatuated with their power and their role in God’s redemptive purposes. Today, we have Jewish literature written between the time of the Old Testament and New Testament that shows they had developed a theology that had elevated angels to a god-like state.
- They had come to believe that angels were God’s sena ...
