Open your Bibles to Hebrews 9. If you’ve ever read the United States tax code or tried to figure out what you owe the government on April 15th without the help of an accountant or computer software, you know it can be a very complicated ordeal. Tax laws and loopholes can be extremely difficult and complex to understand. Every year it seems it that lawmakers in Washington D.C. say, ‘We feel your pain, and we promise to reform the tax system. We promise to make it easier and less complicated.’ Have you heard that before? Ever year they seem to make a few tweaks here and there, but it always remains a very complicated system.
I want you to imagine for a moment that this next spring the government comes out with a statement that says, ‘We’ve heard your complaints and concerns and we’ve really been working hard.’ Remember, I said use your imagination. ‘We’ve heard your concerns and we’ve overhauled the entire tax system to make it much easier, and this is how it works.
#1: You pay a one-time tax, and you never have to pay another tax your entire life.
#2: That one-time tax you pay will be equal to your net worth. You add up and calculate the value of everything you own, and that is your one-time tax. But here’s the good news
#3: The government is running such a surplus, we have trillions and trillions and trillions of surplus dollars, we’re going to pay that one-time tax bill for you.
How many of you would go for an agreement like that? It’s inconceivable that anyone would say, ‘You know that sounds nice, but I really like the old system better.’ The only thing harder to imagine is for someone to say, ‘Yes, that’s a great idea, pay the tax for me.’ And then a few years later say, ‘You know, I sure miss the old way. I miss looking for lost receipts. I miss worrying about how much I was going to owe every year. I miss writing out those checks to the IRS every ...
