Hebrews 6:4-8
Open your bibles to Hebrews 6. One of the challenges to good, clear communication is that words have different meanings to different people. You can say the exact same sentence to three separate people and it’s possible each one will have a different interpretation of what you meant.
Anyone old enough to remember the old ‘‘The Wizard of Id’’ comic strip? A funny one I remember had in the first panel a serf coming into the castle to address the king. He said, ‘‘Your Majesty, Rodney is outside the castle with a wagon full of underwear.’’ The king said, ‘‘Oh no! I can’t believe it!’’ The surf asked, ‘What’s going on, your Majesty?’ The king said, ‘‘I asked Rodney to DEBRIEF the troops.’’ Because many words can have double meanings depending on the context, sometimes clear communication and full understanding is a challenge.
That is also true when it comes to the Bible. Some things are extremely clear upon the first reading. Other things take time and consideration and can still be a bit fuzzy. This morning, we’re going to leap from a wagon full of underwear into Hebrews 6, one of the toughest passages in all of Scripture to interpret and understand. I have read numerous commentaries and listened to many pastors focused on this passage, and not one of them sees it the same way. There are similarities, but none completely agree with one another.
So what should we do? Should we skip it and move on to the parts that are easier to understand? I’d like to say ‘yes’, but God has put this here for a reason. All Scripture is inspired God and given for our instruction, edification, and correction. That includes Hebrews 6. So I’m going to do my best to share what I think this passage says to us and means for us, and then trust that the Holy Spirit of God will use it to speak truth into your heart and provide spiritual food for your soul.
