I heard something this week that took me by surprise. Maybe it will astonish you as well. A scholar at the University of Chicago did a study and found that more has written about Jesus Christ in the last 20 years than all of the previous 20 centuries. Isn’t that remarkable? Does that surprise you? Contrary to what many might want us to think, there is a measurable increase in the interest level people have when it comes to the person of Jesus. You’ve probably seen in secular publications stories on ‘Searching for the Real Jesus’. But the question we should probably ask is this: Is all this searching for the real Jesus leading people to the right conclusions about the biblical Jesus?

In the ‘letter to the editor’ section in one of these publications following an article about finding the real Jesus, one reader wrote: ‘‘If Jesus was not the Son of God, then Jesus was certainly the greatest social reformer to ever walk the earth. His message of love, compassion, and equality in the sight of God will forever comfort and challenge mankind. In the end, it really doesn’t matter what happened after Jesus died. It is enough to know that His life, not His death, altered the course of history.’’ Is that true? Was Jesus simply a great social reformer and moral teacher whose message should be heard and heeded? Absolutely not.

That’s one of the reasons we are studying the book of Hebrews. The writer of Hebrews goes to great links to show us exactly who the real Jesus is. Last week, as we began our study, we learned that the writer of Hebrews proclaims that Jesus is greater and more superior than any prophet, any moral leader, or any religious teacher that ever lived.
