People get excited about reunions. Spending time with family and friends you haven’t seen in a while can be happy fun times. Not all reunions are happy. I read about one small high school reunion where everyone seemed to have a great time reminiscing and reliving their glory days, everyone except for Debbie.
Debbie was miserable and on the verge of tears the entire evening. An old friend noticed she was upset and asked what was wrong. She couldn’t hold back the tears any longer and said, ‘‘It’s sad that there are some things you just can’t forget.’’ He asked Debbie to explain. She said one of their classmates, Karen, over 27 years ago when they were in second grace, started the ‘‘Debbie Haters Club’’ and she had never forgotten it, never gotten over the pain and never forgiven. When she saw Karen, all those emotions came flooding back.
Wow! A 27-year-old grudge! A 27-year-old open wound! Some may be thinking, ‘‘That ain’t nothing. I’ve been nursing a grudge and carrying a wound longer than that!’’
Well, Jacob, who was still recovering from one stressful and dangerous conflict, was headed into yet another. He was finally headed for home but home meant Esau, his older twin brother who well over 20 years earlier founded the ‘‘Jacob Haters Club.’’
Though it may have had its roots in childhood jealousy, competition, and mischief, the founding of the ‘‘Jacob Haters Club’’ was birthed out of the vindictive murderous anger of a brother defrauded. Jacob swindled and stole from Esau what Esau believed to be his rightful birthright and place in the family. This was the reason for Jacob’s 20-year excursion.
Jacob is well aware that when he arrives, he may not see ‘‘Welcome Home’’ signs lining the streets, balloons tied to the front gate at the family farm or banners and streamers hanging from the eaves of the old home place. Instead, he knows the only signage he might see are ‘‘No Jacobs Al ...
