Solid God (4 of 8)
Series: SOLID
Steve Jones
Exodus 3:14
Series Summary: This is a topical sermon series on the basic Bible doctrines that form a solid foundation for the Christian life.
Sermon Summary: We look at three attributes of God that contribute to his ‘‘solidity.’’ 1) God is self-existent (aseity). 2) God is unchanging (immutable). 3) God is good.
INTRODUCTION: On September 15, 1979, when Joel Sonnenberg was two years of age, he and his family were in a car driving north on Interstate 95. Stopping to pay their toll at the Hampton, New Hampshire, tollbooth, they were rear-ended by a huge truck. The Sonnenberg car exploded into flames, and Joel, trapped in a baby seat, was horribly burned. Had he not been pulled from the car in a heroic effort, he would have certainly died within a few more seconds. Joel Sonnenberg was marked for life on that day. Burned over 88 percent of his body, he lost a hand and had to have his face rebuilt. He has spent literally years in the hospital in rehabilitation. Aside from the unspeakable physical pain, there have been social struggles. But none of this, the persistent pain and the social stigma, stopped Joel. Years later, when he entered high school, he became captain of the soccer team, the president of the student body, and the prince of the junior prom. Later, at Taylor University in Indiana, he was elected president of the sophomore class. When you hear Joel Sonnenberg’s story (as it was recently told on CBS’s 48 Hours), questions spring immediately to mind. Questions such as: How does a young man find meaning in all this tragedy; the limitations, the loss of a normal life? Joel says ’’If I did not believe in God, then I’m doing all this pain for nothing. If I did not believe in God, then all these surgeries that I have gone through and continue to go through, and all the pain and suffering that I will continue to go through is for nothing.’’
Obviously, belief in God made a dramatic difference in Joel’s ...
