In 2006, we bought a house. When we purchased it, we knew that we would need to put $15,000 or so in it to make it what we wanted. Friends of ours from the church were the contractors. The first step was to take the Kitchen down to the studs and begin to reconstruct there. As it turned out, it was a good thing we did because when we removed the counter and cabinets by the sink, we discovered that there a leaked had caused the joist to rot. As you know, we had to cut away all the rotted wood until we found healthy wood to begin working on our project.

When I put the word rot in the thesaurus, it returned synonyms like decay, deterioration, corrosion, and CORRUPTION. Truth is, we understand these terms all too well. We can find corruption or rot in many places. Obviously, we find it in construction.

Medicine - We think all looks good and the doctor runs a test and....

Politics - We think all is going well until someone digs deeper.

Government - The reason for audits is to expose corruption.

Church - all looks good UNTIL, someone (Jesus) uncovers and exposes.

The Corruption will be and remain until someone exposes it.

This seems to be our church in Thyatira. They looked good and they sounded good until the eyes of fires permeate their façade.

Just one thought before we read. Becoming corrupted is not something anyone or any organization desires to do, most of the time it is subtle and gradual. To read this passage is to get the sense that this corruption happened over time - a little compromise (last week) leads to corruption.
