‘‘Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’’

I grew up in a part of New Orleans whereby we frequently had uninvited guests at the house. These guests had the tendency to come around when we were not around, or after we went to sleep. You really didn’t know they were there until you walked into the kitchen and turned the light on. It was then that they realized they were uninvited, turned around, and started running! These uninvited guests I’m referring to are known scientifically as ‘‘Periplaneta Americana,’’ but we know them as the common household cockroach!

You may be asking yourself, ‘‘Why did he bring up such a pest as the cockroach?’’ I’m glad you asked that question. I brought up the cockroach because it symbolizes how sin operates in our lives.

• When we least expect it, it shows up!
• When we think it’s not there, it’s there!
• When we deal with it, it runs and flees!
But we must understand that sin will flee from us when we have the right deterrent for it and that is the light of God.

Here in our text, Jesus is continuing His sermon on the mount. He’s already told the masses that they are blessed when they endure certain challenges and obstacles in life. It’s encouraging to know that:

• When you mourn, you will be comforted;
• When you are poor in spirit, the kingdom of heaven is yours;
• When you are meek, you shall inherit the earth;
• When you hunger and thirst after righteousness, you shall be filled.
