There’s a story about a husband and wife on the morning of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The woman is sobbing hysterically, and the husband has no idea why. He asks her, ‘‘What is wrong? Why are you crying on our anniversary?’’ The wife answers, ‘‘You never tell me you love me.’’ The husband replies, ‘‘Listen, I told you twenty-five years ago I loved you. If anything changes, I’ll let you know.’’

Several years ago, I had a manufacturing job, at a local carpet mill. I worked on night shift as supervisor and had a team of around twelve air entanglement operators. Our task was to place little air crimps in the yarn and to achieve a certain machine efficiency, which was gauged by running time and the total weight of the yarn that came off of each machine.

I tried a simple experiment on our shift, at the end of the shift, I would add up all of the numbers, and when I had out the numbers to each operator the next day, I would place a simple smiley face on each sheet if they exceeded their goal, a straight line face, if they met their goal, and a frown if they failed to achieve their goal. In a matter of no time, our shift began producing the best numbers out of all three shifts. I was shocked at how a simple smiley face could motivate grown adults to do their best. People love to be recognized!!!
