1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Richard DeHaan, the nephew of the founder of Radio Bible Class and Our Daily Bread, was visiting Virginia Beach in the fall of 1994. It was almost deserted with just a few shell hunters and a couple of brave surfers trying to catch some waves.
As he was walking alone his eye caught sight of a homeless man sitting outside of McDonald’s. Months of untrimmed hair flowed from beneath his red and white bandanna, framing his face with bushy sideburns that merged into a huge reddish beard.
He walked over and sat down next to the stranger who extended his tobacco-stained hand and said, ‘‘Hello, I’m Sam Johnson.’’
Dennis responded, ‘‘I’m Dennis DeHaan.’’ Without hesitating,
Sam replied, ‘‘Our Daily Bread. Richard DeHaan is the only
one who tells me God loves me.’’
Dennis said he was speechless! A destitute man was hanging on to a slender thread of love he had grabbed from a page in Our Daily Bread. He asked Sam, ‘‘What are you doing here?’’ He replied,
‘‘Just waiting my time.’’ Dennis groped for something meaningful to say as tears flowed from his eyes and dripped from his nose. We both knew that this was more than just a chance meeting.
Dennis reaffirmed his statement, ‘‘God does love you.’’ He asked,
‘‘What can I do for you?’’ ‘‘Nothing,’’ he answered. Dennis pulled out a copy of Our Daily Bread from his pocket and handed it to him. ‘‘Will you write your name in this,’’ asked Sam. He wrote a
brief word of encouragement on the inside of the cover, quoted
Romans 5:8 God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
Dennis handed Sam another copy of Our Daily Bread and said, ‘‘Please sign this one for me.’’ As he turned to leave tears came
to his eyes. He did not know what their meeting meant to Sam. But in the booklet, he autographed, he left a clue. Sam had written, ‘‘What passeth in the name of love.’’
