Overflowing Joy (2 of 9)
Series: Fruit of the Spirit
Stephen Whitney
1 Peter 1:6-9

Often our happiness is conditional. When things go the way, we want them to go we are happy, but when things don’t go the way
we want them to go we are sad. Our happiness is conditional and
often based on how we feel at the time.

The word happy comes from the word hap which means chance
or good fortune. If the circumstances we desire come together
the result will be temporary happiness because something happens that takes it away. Dictionary defines joy as an ‘‘emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something good or satisfying.’’

There is a great difference between temporary happiness and real lasting joy which is not based on circumstances, but on a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ knowing that our sins are forgiven.

The Greek word grace (charis) and the Greek word joy (chara) come from the same root word. Grace means delight in or favor given to another person. Joy means delight which you experience
inwardly and which is expressed outwardly. If you have been saved by God’s grace you should experience God’s joy.

For the writers of Scripture, joy was not a fleeting happiness
or spiritual feeling, but an inward consistent satisfaction. It
was a gladness of heart that filled your whole mind and soul.
