Americans love affair with the ocean began with the development of a small group of resorts along the Atlantic coast in the late 1700’s. Visitors went to escape the increasingly dirty cities,
just to get away for some clean fresh air.
Tom Carroll, owner of a prominent inn in Cape May, NJ said,
‘‘The beach and the waves have a magic I don’t think we fully understand.’’ He says visitors want to see the ocean as soon as
they arrive - even if they haven’t checked in or unpacked - and in about a day’s time they are transformed by it. Their pace slows, their faces relax and they steer clear of the phone and the TV.
In 1998 more than 40% of Americans spent some of their vacation time at the ocean enjoying the sand and the surf. What draws so many of us to the ocean?
Families like to go because there is something for everyone to do and it doesn’t require special skills to just sit and enjoy the sights and sounds of the sand and the sea which are constantly changing.
Researchers have found people often choose the ocean because they just want to relax from the everyday strain and stress of life.
Relaxation and relief from stress are the main reasons people take vacations and the beach seems to be a place where that happens.
We all have personal stress in our lives about our career,
our children, our health and our future. Sometime we are like
the man who said to his friend, ‘‘I’m afraid to go home . . .
I left my worries on the doorstep.’’
What concern, fear or worry is on your mind so that it is taking away peace in your life? Personal finances, job security, health issue, family problem, or unsaved loved ones.
God’s desire is that his peace control our heart even though we
are going through difficulties, or facing problems in our lives.
