Ephesians 6:1-3
INTRODUCTION-
ILLUS: Satan comes to church one Sunday morning. He throws the doors open, steps through with a clap of thunder and the smell of brimstone. As he walks down the aisle, people scream and run from the church in terror. As Satan comes to the podium there is only man left in the church. Sitting on the third pew, looking unimpressed. Satan walks up to the man, and with fire in his eyes asks, ‘‘Why aren’t you scared?’’ The man looked the devil in the eye and said, ‘‘because I’ve been married to your sister for the past 20 years!
As always the word has reacted in hostility to the bible’s clear teaching on the home. Yet, after several generations of raising American families on humanistic principles what do we have to show for it? A high divorce rate. Children that are unhappy, turning to sex, drugs, and violence.
The route to a happy and fulfilling home life is found in obedience to the scriptures. In our passage this morning Paul gives several commands to children and parents. Commands that if followed will make a home harmonious and happy.
I) THE COMMAND TO CHILDREN-VS. 1-3,
Children-Tekna. All offspring. Not just small children, but all children still under their parents roof. Also applies to step-parents, and adoptive parents.
Passage contains 2 commands to children and promise.
A) OBEDIENCE-VS. 1
To obey is to listen with attentiveness and to respond positively to what is heard. Children are to put themselves under the words and authority of the parents.
‘‘Obedience is doing what they say, when they say to do it, the way they say to do it, and not talking back in the process!’’ C. Wimberly
(Col 3:20 NASB) Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
