INTRODUCTION:
ILLUS: Effective armor is a crucial element in spiritual warfare. If you leave anything unprotected, the enemy will find a way to exploit that chink in your armor.
The New York Times reports, ‘‘Since the war started, more than 2,300 American soldiers in Iraq have been hurt in combat, many by artillery shells and homemade bombs that spray shrapnel. Bulletproof vests and helmets protect vital organs. But as the insurgency continues, doctors say that severe facial injuries, along with wounds to the arms and legs, are becoming a hallmark of this war.’’
Dr. Jeffrey Poffenbarger, an Army neurosurgeon, has treated a number of the injured soldiers. Sgt. Jeremy Feldbusch was one of those patients. The 24-year-old Army Ranger, in Iraq for only two months, came home blind. One small piece of metal changed his life.
‘‘There’s that little area between where the helmet ends and the body armor starts,’’ said Poffenbarger. ‘‘And we’re seeing a lot of guys getting hit right there, right in the face.’’
Some of you here this morning can identify. Satan has found a hole, a weak spot in your armor, and he’s hitting you right square in the face. He’s assaulting your marriage, your children, your finances, your peace of mind - you name it, he’s attacking it.
What do you do? Check your armor. Take up the full armor of God. This morning we will study the pieces of the armor. The sword of the Spirit and the weapon of prayer.
I) THE HELMET OF SALVATION -
The last piece of armor a soldier would put on would be his helmet. Usually they were made of leather, with plates of metal on the temples and forehead.
