‘‘Bugle calls have been an important tradition to the US Army since its inception, dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times.’’ Each distinct bugle call carried its own meaning and demanded certain actions from the soldiers. (Army.mil)
• First Call. Sounded a warning for soldiers to begin assembling for formation.
• Reveille. Signaled the soldiers to stand-to for morning roll call and accompanied the raising of the national colors.
• Mess Call. Signaled breakfast, lunch and dinner.
• Retreat. Signaled the end of the official duty day.
• Tattoo. Signaled lights in the squad rooms be extinguished and that all loud talking and other disturbances be discontinued within 15 minutes.

Each call was designed to trigger something in the mind of the soldier and elicit the appropriate response.

As we move into the 2nd chapter of Joel, the prophet once again serves as the watchman on the wall. He calls for the warning trumpet to be sounded among God’s people.

After reading about the widespread devastation brought about by the marauding hordes of locust that swarmed Palestine in the first chapter, it would seem Joel’s request for the trumpet call signaling an impending danger at the start of chapter to be a little out of place, a little late.

What good is sounding the air raid siren after the tornado has already ripped through your community? What good is triggering the fire alarm after your house has been turned into charcoal? What good is an evacuation order after the hurricane has already made landfall? The damage is done. What’s the point of the warning?

Well, in this instance, it goes back to part of our discussion from last time. This national natural disaster wiped out their food source. No grain. No grapes. No olives. No vegetable. It consumed the grazing and pastureland for their livestock. It decimated their economy.
