Introduction

It’s hard making friends as a pastor. It’s hard enough just making friends when you’re me; being a pastor on top of that frankly makes it impossible, therefore. But I can remember exactly when we met Jon and Emily in Bracey, Virginia in 2016. It was summertime and Teresa had taken our kids to the pool where she spotted another mom playing with her daughter who looked about the same age as Charley. Teresa and Emily got talking and exchanged numbers and things were looking promising.

Of course, eventually, Teresa did have to spill the beans and tell Emily I was a Baptist pastor, but Emily took it well, I guess. You see, Emily had been raised Catholic; Jon, her husband, raised Ukrainian Orthodox. (Didn’t even know that was a thing) And so, naturally, they had every stereotype of a Baptist minister in their minds, even though I’d like to think that I’m not your typical pastor. But Teresa and Emily had hit it off and so in their minds I think they thought, ‘Well, let’s just see.’

After a few more pool dates, eventually we got to the point of having them over for dinner. And I’ll never forget how Teresa had finished setting those plans. Emily had asked what they could bring and Teresa said, ‘Oh don’t worry about it! We’re just looking forward to our time of sweet fellowship!’ I mean, first off, who talks like that. I’ve been in the church my whole life and the only people I’ve heard talk like that are those annoying D.J.s on K-Love. Needless to say, the family who already had apprehensions of going to the Baptist minister’s house were thoroughly weirded out. Fortunately, they came anyway, and we became great friends. They would later tell us that they feared that when they came over we were going to slaughter a goat and drink Kool-Aid together. Glad we overcame that miscommunication.
