I. Introduction
As we finish up our overview of the End Times this weekend, I want to talk to you about heaven. And let me ask you something: when you think about heaven...and specifically, when you think about what it’s going to look like, what do you picture? In fact, whether you’re on one of our campuses or watching at home, why don’t you look at someone sitting near you and say ‘‘I see ___________’’ If you’re joining us through our online campus or on Facebook or Youtube, maybe put your answer in the chat area, ok? So, I see ____________. Ready? Ok, 1, 2, 3...I see ____________.
I find that, in the western world, where Christianity has a long history of influencing the culture, a lot of people picture pretty similar things. A lot of people picture streets of gold. A lot of people picture pearly gates. A lot of people picture angels playing harps, which is interesting, because I can’t find anywhere in the Bible that says angels play harps. Trumpets, yes, harps, no.
But whether you picture those particular things or not, most people have at least some idea what they think heaven will look like. But what if I asked you what do you picture yourself doing? And that’s where I think it gets a little fuzzier. Most people aren’t real sure what we’re going to do in heaven. Sit around an play harp, maybe? People who grew up in church will sometimes say, ‘‘Well, I guess we’re going to worship God. I guess heaven will be a 24-7 worship service. And I’m going to be honest with you, I’m a worship guy. I love musical worship. I get so much comfort and strength from worshipping God in music, but the idea of doing that 24/7 forever...makes me a little nervous. And I don’t think I’m the only one.
