In this chapter we see the life of Jacob come full circle as he gathers all of his twelve sons before him, while sitting upon his death bed. The story of Jacob began some 147 years earlier as he fought with his brother within his mother’s womb. He was the second born son of Isaac and Rebekah, but he was chosen before his birth and had the favor of God upon his life.

Jacob had to flee for his life, because Esau was going to kill him over being cheated out of his birthright. On his way to Haran the Lord had met with Jacob at Bethel, promising to bless him, favor him, and to bring him back home safely. After spending many years in Haran with Laban, he left that God forsaken land and headed back to Canaan Land.

He had left Canaan with only his staff in his hand and the clothes upon his back, but he returned with two wives, twelve sons, one daughter, and a massive amount of herds, flocks, and servants. The Lord had promised to bless his servant and that is exactly what he did, he blessed Jacob with his favor, which led him to possess a mighty fortune.

As he returned to the Land of Canaan, we fin d Jacob having a very troublesome encounter with his twin brother and he was beyond worried that as the met, Esau might try to kill them all. Esau on the other hand had also been blessed and now he was the father of a great and mighty people. The two parties met and reconciled before going their separate ways.

Jacob had lost his favorite son because of the jealousy of his sons, but God had a divine plan in the making, as he allowed Joseph to be sold as a slave unto the Egyptians. In time the Lord placed his favor upon Joseph just as he had Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
