In the summer of 1977, there was a group of us teenage guys that decided to go hiking in the woods at the base of the Cohutta Wildlife Management Area. We lived just to the west of this vast forest and we could not think of a better way to spend a day.
There were about 12 of us that left out that morning, with some water and a few sandwiches to eat, as we crossed the creek and walked through some fields before entering the woods. It was a nice summer morning as we begin to walk along a very familiar path, but in time my brothers and my cousins decided they wanted to go back home.
It was around noontime as my friend Billy and I were left alone on our hike into the forest. We were both 17, went to school together, and played sports together. In time we left the familiar trail and begin to explore other areas of the forest that we had never seen. I could not begin to tell you how many days I spent walking those trails, hunting, walking, or even running, but we begin to travel down an unfamiliar path.
After a few hours of walking, I realized that we were lost and we decided to follow the creek, which would lead us out of the forest and bring us back to civilization. As we begin to follow the creek out of the mountains, it seemed that every few feet, we would see a snake drop off of a limb into the creek.
After a long discussion, we decided that the creek was not a viable option, so we agreed to enter the woods and head back home. I truly did not have a clue where we were, but I knew that the sun set behind our house, so we begin to follow the sun ...
