Colossians 1:7-15


I. Introduction

Welcome to grassroots weekend here at Mission Hills. If you’re just joining us for the first time, you should know that this isn’t our normal worship style. We do this once a year on the 4th of July weekend, kind of as a way of looking back on the history of worship music in America.

And I love it, but I think whenever we do something like this, it’s easy to get nostalgic about the role Christian faith played in our country in the past. And it’s easy to get frustrated about the role it plays in our country in the present. And sometimes we get cynical about the role Christian faith will play in our country in the future.

But I want to remind you of two things today: First, I want to remind us that our hope is not in this nation. In fact, the bible says: But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:20).

The second thing I want to remind you of is that Jesus has a plan for changing the world. Not just our nation, the world. But, and this is really important: Jesus plan is very different than the ones we often seem to embrace.

Let me show you what I mean. If you want to follow along in your own bible, why don’t you start making your way to Colossians 1:7. If you’re just joining us, let me get you caught up real quick: last week, the apostle Paul and a friend of his named Timothy had praised the followers of Jesus in the Roman city of Colossae because they had truly understood God’s grace. Now grace is undeserved, sacrificial love, and for Paul to say the Colossian Christians had truly understood God’s grace, means that they hadn’t just been delivered by grace...it means that their lives were being defined by it. They were showing the same grace to others that God had showed to them. And because of that, the gospel was spreading. And now, Paul says:
