Colossians 2:1-7
I. Introduction
I want to talk to you today about the secret to experiencing everything Jesus said was possible in a relationship with him.
And I’ll just tell you right up front: it’s not much of a secret. It’s actually front-and-center, all over the Bible, but it feels like it must be a secret because a lot of us aren’t experiencing everything Jesus said was possible in a relationship with him.
• Jesus said, ‘‘Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.’’ (Mat 11:28) but a lot of us are tired.
• Jesus said, ‘‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’’ (John 10:10) but a lot of us feel like we’re running on empty.
• Jesus said, ‘‘I have told you these things so that in me, you may have peace.’’ (John 16:33) but a lot of us are anxious and upset all the time.
• Jesus said, ‘‘With God, all things are possible.’’ (Mat 18:26) but a lot of us feel like we just keep running into dead ends.
• Jesus said, ‘‘I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’’ (Mat 28:20) but a lot of us feel isolated and alone.
So what’s the secret - that’s not really a secret - to experiencing everything Jesus promised? Well, that’s what we’re going to talk about today. If you want to follow along in your own bible, we’re going to be in Colossians 2, starting in verse 1.
If you’re just joining us, let me get you caught up real quick. The book of Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to a group of Jesus’ followers living in the Roman city of Colossae. And he was basically writing to tell them to keep their eyes on Jesus. And the reason he was writing to tell them that was because there were some other people telling them, ‘‘Hey, Jesus is great, don’t get me wrong...Jesus is great...but if you want to have real spiritual power, if you want to be truly spiritual, there are other things you have to do, other secre ...
