James 4:13-17
The date was November 22, 1963. President John Kennedy planned to have a great day with many appearances, To arrive at Love Field at 11:35, leave in the car @ 11:45, arrive at the Fair Grounds @ 12:45, leave Dallas At 2:35 and get to Austin around 3:15. The unexpected problem was that around 12:30, he was killed.
The date was June 6, 1968, US Attorney General and Candidate for the Presidency, Robert (Bobby) Francis Kennedy, also had big plans. He had just delivered a victory speech on the night of the California primary and, as he was exiting the building with the presidency in view, He was shot and killed.
Just 2 months earlier, April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr, was standing on the balcony of a motel in Memphis, believing he was making a difference in the lives of the African Americans in the USA and that their future was getting better, when a shot was heard, and he was dead.
Why do I begin with these 3 men? No matter how differing you are with their political views, consider this; They were 46, 43, and 39, years old. They woke up their day on earth, thinking they had everything to live for, likely laughing, talking, making plans, and carrying on just like we did today. Life was full of all kinds of things. In their minds, death seemed like years away. They were like we are.
They were making plans for tomorrow, next week, month, years, just like we are. The question is, ‘‘Do our plans begin or end with the Lord?’’ This is James’ issue. Someone wrote that ‘‘James may have been addressing his successful business owners and others who felt like they had a corner on knowing what God wanted. He was doing HIS BEST, as their PASTOR-LEADER, to lean less on self and more on God.
