Summer in the Psalms

Psalm 1
I read this week of (2) middle-aged ladies who walked into a police station to file a missing person’s report for one of their husbands. When the officer asked for a description, the wife said, ‘‘The man I’m looking for is 6’1’’, 185 lbs., ripped abs, sharply-dressed, w/ thick, jet black hair.’’ As the officer began to write, the other lady said, ‘‘Mary, you know good/well your husband is 5’6’’, 250 lbs., slovenly dressed, w/ a bad comb-over!’’ To which the first lady said, ‘‘Yes, that’s true - but who wants him back?’’
Truth is, many of us go thru life searching for someone or something to bring us happiness/fulfillment. Maybe it’s searching for the right man/woman, the right job, the right friends, the right whatever - yet too often people go unfulfilled. Yet what if true happiness was not found outside of ourselves but w/in?
This AM, we’re starting a summer series in Psalms. In this series, each week, one of our pastors will be sharing and teaching his favorite Psalm. To help us thru the summer, we’re also providing a reading plan thru Psalms that we hope you’ll include in your daily time w/ God. You can get the plan on the church website at www.fbcptc.org.
To get us started, let me give you a little background on the Psalms.
The Psalms are a collection of 150 Hebrew poems penned from different periods thru-out Israel’s history spanning from Moses to after Solomon - and later compiled sometime after Israel’s exile to Babylon. Of course, many of them (73) were ascribed to David - yet there were many other contributors including Asaph, Sons of Korah, Moses, Solomon, and others.
Thru-out Israel’s history, the Psalms were sung in the Temple as a part of worship, yet the book of Psalms is more than a hymn book. After the exile to Babylon, these Psalms were compiled to be a book of prayer and praise for God’s people to retell the story of God as they sought to live faithfully under the teachings of the ...
