Eyes Wide Open

Revelation 1:1-3
• Over my lifetime I have been blessed to serve with many wonderful men. The last pastor that I worked with as a music minister was Dr. Alton Butler. We simply had a great friendship, kind of a ‘father and son’ type of relationship. He and I were always teasing one another. One day I walked into the office went to my message box and found a newspaper article which said, ‘‘The World to End March 31, 1991 (A local group in Australia).’’ Attached to the article was this note, ‘‘Thought you might want to put this on your calendar.’’ (A big smile was drawn on the note) ‘‘The end of the world’’, ‘‘The 2nd coming of Christ,’’ ‘‘The Rapture of the Church,’’ ‘‘The appearing of Jesus’’ are all things that ‘should’ permeate our thinking. It did years ago. In fact, when I was here, 45+ years ago, we heard much about was the Book of Revelation and that Jesus was coming again. Songs like ‘‘The King is Coming,’’ ‘‘Redemption Draweth Night,’’ ‘‘Jesus is Coming Soon,’’ and my personal favorite, ‘‘I wish we’d all be ready’’ were permeating Christian Radio and churches.
• A cloud of mystique seems to surround the book of the Revelation, and likely with good reason. There is much that takes more than a cursory reading. The Revelation is written to encourage those who have trusted in Christ, plus it’s written in a code that those in Christ should hear and understand. The true, born-again, child of God should receive it as encouraging, motivating, and a reminder of ‘‘WHO’’ and ‘whose’ we are. BTW, it’s not the book of ‘‘Revelations’’, there is only one.
• While some of the ‘revelations in Revelation’ shows us how God will ultimately judge the world, if we only see that message we miss much.
• One last thing before we dig in; This book is different from every other book in the Holy Bible. It opens with the summary of the book, then gives an outline of the book, and then gives us pictures of the Lord’s plan.
• My prayer ...
