How many of you watch reality television? Be honest? I won’t ask what shows you like or watch but I think we know not all reality television is created equal. What does that mean? It means the reality television I watch is more real than whatever it is you watch! Who doesn’t love watching people fish alligators for a living?! ‘‘Choot ‘Em Lizabeth!’’

One of my favorite reality shows of late is the survival show Alone. Have you seen it? It’s the show where they take, usually 10 people, drop them off in the wilderness, cut off from any human contact, with only 10 items of their choosing, and they are left to survive...alone. This show captivates me, much to the chagrin of my daughter and wife but I love it. It engages so many parts of my psyche.

As someone who is not an outdoorsman or very skilled with my hands, I am amazed at their ability to ...
• Build and do bushcraft with only a couple of tools. They are ingenious and resourceful. Build shelters. Meat caches. Smoke houses. Furniture. Musical instruments. Games.
• Fish, hunt, trap, gather and scavenge.
o I am amazed at how they use what they catch and kill and what all they eat. Let’s just say, not much of an animal that goes to waste and much of what goes in their mouths is not going in mine.
o I am amazed at the different things they gather and eat. They eat fungi, plant leaves, roots, berries, and I’ve even seen them eat bark off a tree and ants out of an anthill.

Beyond that, I am intrigued by the show on a psychological level. To hear them talk into the camera, which they set up, and see the toll that isolation, loneliness, hunger, and fatigue takes on their mind and soul is interesting.

I am also impressed by their bravery. It is dangerous. They are placed in very hazardous situations. Wolves. Wolverines. Snakes. Black Bears. Grizzly Bears. Polar Bears. The terrain. The weather. Simple injuries can be life-threatening because they a ...
