John 17:13-19
While very ill, John Knox, the founder of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland, called his wife and said, ‘‘Read me that Scripture where I first cast my anchor.’’ After he listened to the beautiful prayer of Jesus recorded in John 17, he seemed to forget his weakness. He began to pray, interceding earnestly for his fellowmen. He prayed for the ungodly who had thus far rejected the gospel. He pleaded on behalf of people who had been recently converted. And he requested protection for the Lord’s servants, many of whom were facing persecution.
As Knox prayed, his spirit went home to be with the Lord. The man of whom Queen Mary had said, ‘‘I fear his prayers more than
I do the armies of my enemies,’’ ministered through prayer until
the last moment of his death on November 24, 1572.
Jesus ministered to his disciples in prayer until the last hours of his life. He wanted to encourage them as he would be leaving them.
So, he prayed they would be protected from Satan and they would come to understand that they belonged completely to God. Jesus would no longer be with them, but they would be children of God.
REJECTION :13-14
I am coming to you - in just 43 days he would return to heaven.
Acts 1:9 He was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.
Jesus is praying to be heard by his Father in heaven as the disciples listen to what he has to say. He wants the disciples to know his desire for them is that they may experience the joy he has in fulfilling the will of God for their salvation.
My joy - they might have the joy in their relationship with Jesus which he had with his Father even when he was gone from them.
Fulfilled - complete or lasting because of the results of his death and resurrection would give them the promise of eternal life.
Jesus was telling the disciples the truth now while he was still
with them so they might have joy when he rose ...
