Glorify Me (17 of 21)
Series: The Upper Room
Stephen Whitney
John 17:1-5
Prayer is simply talking to God by sharing what is on your heart.
Prayer - Gk. to speak out or express your desire.
W.S. Bowden - ‘‘It is weakness leaning on omnipotence.’’
To pray is to share with God what you are feeling. Prayer can take different forms depending on what we want to express to God:
Praise - to God for what he has done.
Repentance - for sins against God.
Request - for your personal needs.
Intercession - for the needs of others.
Often, our prayers are about what we want God to do for us.
William Law (d. 1761) was an English pastor - ‘‘Prayer is
a mighty instrument, not for getting man’s will done in heaven,
but for getting God’s will done on earth.’’
Overview
From the time of the Reformation (1500’s) it has been known as Christ’s ‘‘High Priestly Prayer.’’ It is the longest prayer in the NT,
over 600 words. There are three things on his mind as he prays:
1. His own needs (:1-5).
2. The needs of his disciples (:6-19).
3. The needs of future believers (:20-26).
GOD’S GLORY :1
Matthew. Henry - ‘‘When he had spoken from God to them (chapters 13-16), he turned to speak to God for them.’’
Lifted up his eyes to heaven - to acknowledge he was talking
to God, not them. Matthew 6:9 Our Father who art in heaven . . .
Father - occurs over 100x in the gospel and 7x in this prayer by Jesus (:5,11,21,24,25). In using the word father, he indicates his close, personal relationship with God.
14:10 I am in the Father and the Father is in me.
God the Father and Jesus the Son are one because they share
the same divine essence (10:30 I and the Father are one.)
Hour - is used throughout the gospel to refer to the death of Jesus (2:4, 7:30, 8:20, 12:23, 27, 13:1). After three years of ministry Jesus was fully aware he was going to die in less than 24 hours.
