The Basics
Jerry Watts
Revelation 1-3
• Vince Lombardi is a Hall of Fame football coach, and was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960’s. He led the team to three straight and five total NFL Championships in a seven-year span. His namesake, The Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the winner of The Super Bowl each year. In 1961, at the start of training camp, it is told that he walked into the locker room of the Green Bay Packers and said to his team what would become one of the most iconic quotes in sports history... ‘‘Gentlemen, this is a football.’’ The iconic words spoken by him were all about getting back to basics or fundamentals. Without those, regardless of what you’re doing, you can wind up giving up and losing out.
• To be clear, Coach Lombardi wasn’t talking with all rookies or newbies.
• At times, I feel the need to hold up the Bible and say, ‘‘This is a Bible’’, ‘‘It is our guidebook, Jesus is our reason, and the gospel is our purpose.’’
• The church exists, this church exists because Jesus died to save someone like ME (and you). According to Matthew 16, Jesus establishes and owns the place, and He has HIS plan for it. That plan the Great Commission and Great Commandment. That includes growing in grace, knowledge, and action becoming a disciple who makes disciples. This is Christianity 101.
It’s saved people helping other people have a deep relationship with God.
• Why is this so important? Great question, here’s the answer: ‘Everyone exists through eternity - SOMEWHERE.’ How long has it been since you thought about and meditated on that truth? How long has it been since you thought about your family, friends, and neighbors, in light of that truth? Let me turn the knife just a bit. Jesus says, ‘‘I am the only way to a home in heaven or to the Father.’’ If this is true (it is) as keeper of the truth (mystery), it our task to convey this truth to our community.
• And I believe that our community is waiting.
