Series Summary: This is an expository sermon series through I Peter. Jesus gave to Peter the ‘‘Keys of the Kingdom’’ (Matthew 16:19). ‘‘Keys’’ will be the uniting theme for the series.
Sermon Summary: We are prepared to meet God when we have 1) Believed the saving event and 2) Experienced the saving event.
INTRODUCTION: PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD! Whenever I hear that in church or see it on a street corner, I tend to think, ‘‘Yeah, I’ve already done that.’’ Today, I want to talk about being prepared to meet God. But most of us have already done that, haven’t we? Yes, we have. That’s why we’re IN CHURCH. So why talk about the preparations we’ve already made? I’m glad you asked.
In his book ‘‘Devoted,’’ Aaron Chambers writes about his father, Roger Chambers. Roger passed away unexpectedly in his sleep from a congenital heart defect in 1988, when Aaron was just a boy. Here’s what a grown-up Aaron writes: ‘‘As I look back now, with more understanding and insight into what my dad gave up for my siblings and me when we were growing up, I know - without a doubt - he loved us, because he demonstrated it through countless sacrifices. While we were still children and incapable of giving him much beyond our love and obedience, he regularly went without lunch, so my siblings and I could afford our extra-curricular activities. He taught extra classes and took speaking engagements so we could afford to take vacations. He drove an old, yellow, Pontiac station wagon (a.k.a. ‘‘The Banana’’), instead of a new, or even slightly new, car so he could keep the kids fed and clothed.’’ These reflections of an older and more mature Aaron do not make him MORE of a son to his father. But they did increase his appreciation and affection for his father. AND they reinforced his commitment to follow his father’s example as well as increasing his anticipation of reuniting with Roger one day in Heave ...
