Marriage Key (15 of 22)
Series: Keys of the Kingdom
Steve Jones
Scripture: 1 Peter 3:1-7

Series Summary: This is an expository sermon series through I Peter. Jesus gave to Peter the ‘‘Keys of the Kingdom’’ (Matthew 16:19). ‘‘Keys’’ will be the uniting theme for the series.

Sermon Summary: The ‘‘Marriage Key’’ sermon describes the ‘‘Purpose-driven Marriage’’ in the following points. 1) Purpose-Driven submission. 2) Purpose-Driven beauty. 3) Purpose-Driven Knowledge. 4) Purpose-Driven honor.

INTRODUCTION: Let me ask you a rhetorical question (that means please don’t answer out loud). What is the purpose of marriage? It’s not a simple question to answer. Kind of like the ‘‘What is a woman?’’ question. It’s SO hard.

Here are some celebrity quotes on marriage.

Socrates: ‘‘By all means, marry. If you get a good spouse, you’ll become happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.’’

Benjamin Franklin: ‘‘Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards.’’

Rita Rudner: ‘‘I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.’’

Carol Burnett: ‘˜Some mornings I wake up grouchy. Other mornings I just let him sleep in.’’

I did an online survey of some Christian Family Ministries on ‘‘What is the purpose of marriage’’ and they provided dozens of different answers. Although none of them were funny, they’re all good answers, which suggests to me that there is no ONE purpose of marriage. But I believe it would be safe to say that Biblical marriage is ‘‘purpose-driven.’’ God DOES have some purposes for marriage. Today we’re going to stomp around where angels fear to tread as we look at Peter’s take on ‘‘the purpose-driven marriage.’’ And for you ‘‘single-types’’ this morning, which is about 40% of you, don’t worry, God has some stuff for you as today as well.

I Cor.7:28 ‘‘Those who marry will have trouble in this life.’’ (No ‘‘Amens’’? No one is ALLOWED to).
