House Key (11 of 22)
Series: Keys of the Kingdom
Steve Jones
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:4-8
Series Summary: This is an expository sermon series through I Peter. Jesus gave to Peter the ‘‘Keys of the Kingdom’’ (Matthew 16:19). ‘‘Keys’’ will be the uniting theme for the series.
Sermon Summary: The ‘‘house key’’ sermon explores the ways in which the CHURCH is the HOUSE of God by focusing on three types of stones: 1) The Cornerstone. 2) The Living Stones. 3) The Stumbling Stone.
INTRODUCTION: What’s the most impressive house you have ever seen personally. A couple of months ago, Tami and I toured the Biltmore house. Though it is no longer a private residence, the Biltmore (the Vanderbilt home), in Ashville, NC, is the largest home ever built in the US. Completed in 1895, it has 4 acres (about 175,000 square feet) under roof, and has 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces and 43 bathrooms. It’s a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. Who wants to clean 43 bathrooms?
Now think about this: God wants to build a house on earth in which He can live (in Florida, of course!). He has all the power and resources to build anything he desires. What house has He chosen to build? Answer: THE CHURCH! Here is how Peter affirms this: I Pt 2:5 ‘‘You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house’’.
The verb is present tense, meaning God is CONTINUING to build up this house. I want to talk about God’s house today and note something to BELIEVE about the house, something to DO about the house and something to BEWARE about the house.
I. The Cornerstone
I Pt.2:4,6 ‘‘As you come to him, the living Stone...a chosen and precious cornerstone’’
In ancient times, every other part of a building was aligned and placed and incorporated according to the cornerstone. Christ is the cornerstone of the church. This was prophesied.
Is.28:16 ‘‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation.’’
Jesus identified him ...
