Word Key (9 of 22)
Series: Keys of the Kingdom
Steve Jones
Scripture: 1 Peter 1:22-25

Series Summary: This is an expository sermon series through I Peter. Jesus gave to Peter the ‘‘Keys of the Kingdom’’ (Matthew 16:19). ‘‘Keys’’ will be the uniting theme for the series.

Sermon Summary: This sermon explores five characteristics of the Word of God: 1) Truth, 2) Imperishable, 3) Living, 4) Enduring, 5) Compelling.

INTRODUCTION: John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute testified before congress that only one in four Americans could name more than one of the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment to the constitution (there are five). More than one third can’t name any and could not name one of the three branches of government. Let’s see how we do. Let’s go for the four best-known freedoms in the First Amendment (one of which we should all get because we’re in church, hint, hint): 1) Religion, 2) Speech, 3) Press, 4) Assembly. And the three branches of government are: Legislative, Executive and Judicial. The reason this is important is because if we are ignorant of, or lack confidence in, our constitution, we’re liable to lose the blessings that flow from living under the ‘‘rule of law’’, right? The same applies to our Bible. If we’re ignorant of, or lack confidence in, the Word of God, we’re liable to lose the blessings that flow from living under the Word of God. To that end, Peter teaches five important truths of God’s Word today.

I Pt.1:22-25 ‘‘Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER.’ And this is the word which was preached to you.’’
