Series Summary: This is an expository sermon series through I Peter. Jesus gave to Peter the ‘‘Keys of the Kingdom’’ (Matthew 16:19). ‘‘Keys’’ will be the uniting theme for the series.

Sermon Summary: This sermon explores the awesomeness of Jesus in four ways 1) Foreknown 2) Revealed, 3) Crucified, 4) Raised.

INTRODUCTION: I wonder if a lot of people aren’t searching for ‘‘awe.’’ We crave a sense of ‘‘awe’’, and we seek to satisfy it through ‘‘spectacle.’’ Maybe that’s part of the attraction of the pageantry of professional sporting events, of plays and movies with special effects, and concerts. Our worship minister was telling me last week that they were at Disney World for the final fireworks show before Disney introduced the new one that started in October for their 50th anniversary. They waited FIVE HOURS to see the show but said it was ‘‘worth it.’’ They said the fireworks show was amazing and that after the show concluded, the throngs of people stood in hushed reverence (rather than bolting for the exits) just wishing it could go on. Their daughter said she cried, and she wasn’t the only one in the crowd who did. Maybe that’s an example of our hunger for ‘‘awe.’’ And I’m not implying there’s anything wrong with that. But that is what we are striving to feel, to experience with God.

In I Peter 1:17 Peter says that we should live in reverent fear of our awe-inspiring God.

The Passion Translation I Pt.1:17 ‘‘Live each day with holy awe and reverence’’.

In verse 18 Peter says we should do this because of something we KNOW. What kind of knowledge is he talking about? As we follow his thought to the end of verse 21, we see that he is referring to our knowledge of JESUS.
