Obedience Key (6 of 22)
Series: Keys of the Kingdom
Steve Jones
Scripture: 1 Peter 1:13-16
Series Summary: This is an expository sermon series through I Peter. Jesus gave to Peter the ‘‘Keys of the Kingdom’’ (Matthew 16:19). ‘‘Keys’’ will be the uniting theme for the series.
Sermon Summary: This sermon explores the quality that God most wants in his children - obedience. 1) Mental Obedience, 2) Sober Obedience, 3) Forward-looking Obedience, 4) Holy Obedience.
INTRODUCTION: Today we’re going to talk about being children of God. If you could pick one specific characteristic that your children (or grandchildren) would be guaranteed to have, which would you choose? At the VCC baby dedication a couple of weeks ago, parents were invited to choose characteristics they would pray for in their children. Some of the choices were: humble, authentic, loving, learned, enthusiastic, kind compassionate, faithful, courageous, loyal, strong, and respectful. Those are all good. But I was surprised that no one went with ‘‘obedience.’’ Wouldn’t you love for them to just do what you say...the first time...without arguing...or complaining?
Christians have been born again into the family of God the Father. God as our heavenly Father certainly desires that we his children have the characteristic of obedience, as revealed in this next section of Peter’s letter.
I Peter 1:13-16 ‘‘Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.’’’
