Turn in your Bible to John 19. We’re in the last four weeks of our year-long series in the Gospel of John. Our tour guide for this Gospel has been Jesus’ best friend, the apostle John. He’s introduced us to Jesus and written all he has so that we might believe, that is, put our faith, hope, and trust in Jesus as our Savior and Lord.

John didn’t share with us everything he knew about Jesus. In fact, in his last chapter he will tell us that Jesus did many other miraculous signs and wonders that he didn’t record. In fact, it would take all the books in the world to contain all He said and did (John 21:25). These things were written, John says, so that you and I might have eternal life through believing in Him (John 20:31).

Pastor Phil talked last week about the crucifixion of Jesus and there was a verse in that passage that seems a little out of place. Let’s look at John 19:35: ‘‘He who saw it’’-that is, the crucifixion of Jesus-’’has borne witness-his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth-that you also may believe.’’ John is speaking about himself. He’s saying, ‘‘I know what I saw and experienced and I know these things to be true.’’ He wants us to believe in it just as he believed.

So now as we pick up in John 19:38, he will tell us that he wasn’t the only person who saw these things. There were other witnesses as well and John gives us details about where they were and what they were doing. Let’s face it; the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus was a huge event in the life of the people who witnessed it. It was something they would never forget, knowing where they were when that happened. John saw those things four decades before he wrote his Gospel, but he remembered them clearly. He testified to them and believed in them as if they had happened that day.
