Romans 5:1-5
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

The Word of the Lord

One of the things that has always encouraged me is missionary biographies. And there are some amazing stories of men and women that really faced all odds to joyfully see the work of Christ go forward. One that is particularly encouraging is the story of John Paton he was a missionary in the 1800s and he went to serve the unreached people of the New Hebrides, and island group north of Australia, modern day Vanuatu. These people were very poor and they were cannibals, and so many people urged him not to go... But he had a very successful ministry, he established churches, he started businesses, and had a lot of influence that lasts to this day on that country but this was not without a lot of trials. One of the reasons that his biography is so interesting is that he faced so many major challenges, including the cannibals trying to eat him.
One night he was running for his life, keep in mind, he had given up everything to go and serve these people and he was always being threatened. So one night, these people were chasing him and they were trying to kill him to eat him, this horrible terrifying moment, and he climbed up a Chestnut Tree to get away...

He later wrote about that night and said, ‘‘I climbed into the tree, and was left there alone in the bush. The hours I spent there live all before me as ...
