Tonight, we look at James 3. The topic is ‘the tongue.’ Over my ministry the title has developed. I’m calling this message, ‘‘The most uncontrollable member in the church’’, but it has been and could be called, ‘‘The meanest member in the church.’’

What do you think of when you hear the word, ‘‘Uncontrollable?’’ Do you think of wild, untamed, strong, intense, unruly, etc? The tongue defies all the other laws of nature. LET’S READ

The Bible clearly say the tongue has more power than anything you can imagine. All the examples and illustrations in our text should have us nodding our heads and saying ‘amen’ or ‘o me’ because we know that is right.

This is indeed a personal and sensitive subject, so it’s always easy to find funny story that some preacher in the past has told. For Instance, Warren Wiersbe tells the story of a woman coming to the altar and saying to the preacher, ‘‘I want to lay my tongue on the altar.’’ The preacher turned and looked at the altar responding, ‘‘I don’t think the altar is big enough.’’ Another story I read is where a doctor asked a woman to stick out her tongue. She did and he took his prescription pad and wrote a script. When he was through writing, he simply said, ‘‘That’s good.’’ She snapped, ‘‘You didn’t even look at my tongue.’’ Calmly he said, ‘‘I didn’t want to look at your tongue, I wanted to keep you quiet while I wrote the script.’’ (She probably found a new doctor)

The tongue possesses very interesting power. It possesses the power of words multiplied by the wind and personality of a person.

James tells us that one mark of Immaturity is the inability to control the tongue (you can figure out the antithesis of this).

Just a cursory reading of this passage leaves us with the impression that James, the first leader of the church in Jerusalem, had encountered the problem loose tongues can cause. He now offers us the Lord view. I suggest ...
