I. Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills. We’re really honored to have you with us this weekend. We’re starting a new series today based on the question: What do you do when the river runs dry? And what we mean by that is what do you do when something that has provided for you or supplied you or maybe even been a source of security in your life…stops providing, stops supplying, stops being a source of security in your life.
Maybe that’s a something like a job. A lot of us look to our jobs not only as a way to make money but as the basis of our identity. So what do we do when the company closes or we get let go? Or maybe it’s a relationship. Maybe it’s your marriage or it’s a boyfriend or a girlfriend or a long-standing friendship, or maybe it’s a relationship with a child. What do we do when a relationship that was such a source of peace, joy and meaning…suddenly falls apart? Or maybe it's an ability. Maybe a physical ability that’s declining as you age. Maybe it’s a psychological ability. Like, maybe you’ve always prided yourself on being optimistic or having great mental health or being able to adapt to new situations and then something like a global pandemic hits and everything changes and you suddenly find yourself lost and confused and what you’ve always been able to do in the past suddenly seems impossible.
I’m talking to a lot of pastors these days who are telling me they’re feeling like they’ve lost it as a leader. They feel like, with God’s help, they’ve weathered just about every kind of storm imaginable successfully…not perfectly, but successfully. And they felt like, with God’s help, they could navigate anything else that might come up…and then Covid hit and then the racial tension ratcheted up and everything turned political and everyone was mad about everything…and a lot of pastors I’m talking to aren’t sure they have what it takes to kee ...
