Ephesians 1:13-14
CIT - The Holy Spirit is God’s official seal of salvation on the believer’s soul.
INTRODUCTION:
This morning we are going to talk about being sealed with the Holy Spirit.
ILLUS: A friend- she could never seem to find assurance of salvation. She was tormented by doubts. It affected her marriage, her job, even her relationship to her children.
Reggie - Grew up in a tradition that taught you could lose your salvation. It lead him to despair, and he just gave up even trying to be a Christian.
I’m convinced that a lot of professing Christians are troubled by doubts and unsure of their salvation.
In I John the Bible tells us that we can know that we have eternal life.
It is possible to know that you are saved and not be plagued by doubts.
Understanding the sealing of the Holy Spirit is a key to having assurance of salvation.
I) FINALITY OR COMPLETION -
A seal was an official stamp signifying that a transaction was completed.
ILLUS Paying the water bill, it was stamped paid in full.
A) THE TERMS ARE SET - Salvation is not automatic or universal. Vs. 13 describes what happens when a person comes to Christ, and receives Him as Lord and Savior.
First, there is hearing - this tells us we have a responsibility. No one will come to Christ without hearing the Gospel.
Then, there was belief - trust. More than just mental assent to the facts. Belief is committing yourself to something.
This means I have to agree with God that I am a sinner and that I deserve to go to Hell. A lot of people have a lot of trouble with that.
B) A PRICE IS AGREED ON -
The Bible tells us that sin has a price. A terrible price. That price is death. The Bible also tells us that Christ paid the price for our salvation.
You see, when you believed in Christ he sealed you with His Spirit and stamped paid in full on your spiritual account.
