Ephesians 1:15-23
INTRODUCTION:
Do you pray for the members and attenders of New Life Church? I hope so. In fact, we will not go far as a fellowship if we do not pray fervently for one another.
But how are we to pray for one another? In some churches I have pastored we had a prayer list. That was good. However, the only reason you would get on the prayer list was sickness. There ought to be more, much more to our praying than sickness.
Sometimes we lie about praying. Not on purpose, but we do. Someone will share their struggle with us and our answer is ‘‘I’ll be praying for you.’’ However, we forget. We don’t even think about it again until we see that person. We do not get alone with God and struggle in prayer over them.
So, How do we pray for others? What do we pray?
Paul gives us a wonderful model prayer here in chp. 1. There are 2 prayers in this short book and both of them are vital to understanding Paul’s approach to the Christian life. In our verses this morning Paul prays that the Ephesians will understand God’s purposes for their lives.
2 attitudes drive this prayer -
Thanksgiving - Vs. 15 ‘‘I do not cease to give thanks for you.’’
He was thankful because of their faith was real. ‘‘I heard about your faith’’ People were talking about the change that come over them.
He was thankful for their love for each other. There was unity in the church at Ephesus.
This moved him to pray for them.
Our prayers for each other should be motivated by our love for each other.
Reliance upon God - Vs. 17 ‘‘That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, may give you the Spirit of . . .’’ He is asking God to grant them spiritual illumination. Open the eyes of your heart - For the Jew the heart was the center of the personality, their total inner person.
This prayer pulls together all the great theology of the first 14 verses. He doesn’t want them to fo ...
