Ephesians 2:8-10
CIT - Paul teaches the Ephesian believers that they are saved by grace, through faith, and for good works.
INTRODUCTION:
I remember a revival meeting where the preacher decided that he would get the crowd involved in the service early on. During one of the songs he asked people to stand up who were saved in the month of January, then Feb, then March and so. He kept at it until the great majority of the place was standing.
Read the passage.
Three truths we find in the verses. Truths that are marked by three word, By, thorough and for.
I) WE ARE SAVED BY GRACE - VS. 8
Grace is the basis of our salvation, it is the divine source.
Grace is perhaps the greatest word in the English language. Nothing so clearly expresses the heart of God as this one word.
‘‘Rightly understood, grace contains within itself the whole of NT theology.’’ J.I. Packer
A) GRACE IS UNDESERVED - Grace is God’s undeserved or unmerited favor.
B)
Grace is something no one deserves. There are two ways that God can deal with you and me. God can deal with us according to justice. That is, He could give us exactly what we deserve.
But God has done something totally different. He has chosen to deal with us by grace. Grace is when God gives us what we do not deserve.
B) GRACE IS A FREE GIFT - That is the transcending emphasis of this passage. Salvation is not earned. It is an act of grace.
Vs. 9 - Not as a result of works lest any man should boast.
Moody Magazine did a survey and found that Fifty-five percent of all Americans said that a good person can earn his way to heaven. But that’s not all. 58% of Episcopalians, 59% of Methodists, 76% of Mormons, and 82% of Catholics agreed. Incidentally, 38% of Baptists also said that a good person can earn his way to heaven.
The problem is that the very best of our works are tainted by sin. Isaiah tells us that our acts of righteous ...
